Notes 3/1

  1. Rome is a very small town, a little village on the hill, while Athens and the rest of Greece is thriving. It will transform into the single most dominant force in the world.
  2. Aeneas- was the last surviving warrior of Troy, and brings his father and son and last surviving people on a trip that goes through the Mediterranean and lands in Carthage.
  3. Dido (the queen of Carthage) and Aeneas fall in love, but the Gods tell him that that was not what he was supposed to do, so he leaves. Daido commits suicide.
  4. The Trojans meet Latinos that live in Latium. They have a war and the Trojans win. This occurs southeast of Rome.
  5. Rome Itself and Italy itself are in a number of pieces.
  6. The Trojans set up a town that is called Alba Longa.
  7. Romulus and Remus were abandoned at birth and were kept alive by a she-wolf in the forest. They had a little bit of sibling rivalry. They declared was on each other. Romulus wins and founds the city of Rome, and Remus is dead. The capital is moved from Alba Longa to Rome.
  8. The Etruscans live just north of Rome. The Etruscan kings rule the city of Rome for several generations.
  9. Tarquin the sixth rapes the wife of a roman nobleman, and he sets off a revolt of Rome against the Etruscan kings.
  10. Plebeians were the Roman common people. The Patricians are the rich people that tell the Plebeians what to do.
  11. The Patricians give the Plebeians one seat in their senate thing. Even though it is only one person, he has immense power. He is the one senator given the right to veto. There are still problems, but they are not at civil war. So Rome decides to fight other people. So they create an army and takes land right up through northern Italy.
  12. They pulled people to join the army young men from the cities that they take over.
  13. Pyrrhus of Epirus. He is the king of Epirus. He decides to invade Rome. He defeats the Roman Army in almost every single battle, but he cant win the war.
  14. 264 BC on the island of Sardenia complained about the Carthaginians taking power from them . Rome comes over to assist.
